The University of Luxembourg is looking for its Faculty of Science, Technology and Medicine (FSTM) in the Department of Engineering (DoE) a: Doctoral candidate (PhD-Student) in Engineering Sciences (M/F) concerning the project New Methods for Bridge Damage Assessment (C-INTER/FNRS/19/1400875 D-DAB) Ref: RCREQ0003882 / OTP: R-AGR-3758-10-C (C-INTER/FNRS/19/1400875 D-DAB) 36 months initial fixed-term contract, extendable up to 48 months in total Full-time (40 hours/week) Student and employee status The successful applicant will work on an FNR-FNRS funded project “ New Methods for Bridge Damage Assessment (D-DAB)”, as part of a Belgian-Luxembourgish team. The doctoral student will benefit from doctoral Program in Engineering Sciences, offered by the Doctoral School for Science and Engineering (DSSE), which aims to provide interdisciplinary and internationally competitive research training. Bridges are doubtlessly an important backbone of Europe’s transport infrastructure. Many bridges were built in the boom years after World War II as reinforced concrete structures and are now suffering from corrosion, wear and ever-increasing traffic loading. Dramatic breakdowns are documented and even widely discussed in public press. Hence, there is evidently an issue with inspection and safety on one hand and with preventive maintenance and cost on the other hand. We are working for many years in close cooperation with “Administration des Ponts & Chaussées Luxembourg” and with “Université de Liège” in this domain. Today we focus on model-updating techniques, i.e. we adapt more or less automatically a special sliced finite element model to match well with static and dynamic measurements. Those characteristics can be dynamic modal parameters, static deflection lines under known test load or sagging lines from dead load. The measurements are taken from real bridges and then temperature compensated for the sake of using as input data for model-updating.
