Position: PhD Student

Duties: Systematic parameter study on the effect of Zn on the SCC initiation in Alloy 182 in BWR & PWR environment by tensile tests with flat tapered tensile and notched fracture mechanics specimens; Exposure of flat Alloy 182 and stainless steel coupon specimens in BWR & PWR environment to study the effect of Zn on the oxide film evolution in high-temperature water; Post-test characterization of the oxide film properties (structure & composition, repassivation, film rupture strain, etc.) on the external surface and crack-flanks/-tips by SEM/EDX/EBSD, TEM, LOM, XRD, XPS, micromechanical tests, etc; Identification of the underlying mechanism; Supervision of master & semester thesis's and internships; Publication of results in scientific journals and at international conferences; The work will be carried out in the Laboratory for Nuclear Materials at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen and the PhD degree will be awarded by the Friedrich Alexander University of Erlangen in Germany with Prof Dr S. Virtanen (Materials Science Department, Chair of Corrosion and Surface Science) as thesis director
Requirements: You hold a Master degree in Materials Science or Metallurgy and have a solid background in corrosion/electrochemistry and metallurgy. Practical experience in material testing and metallographical characterization and very good communication skills in English are also required. A German working knowledge would be an asset
