Position: PhD position on food webs in aquatic systems

Duties: Quantification and understanding of energy- and matter transfer across trophic levels in aquatic and terrestrial food webs are essential for our assessment of ecosystem response to environment change. Especially under the current pressure of global change we need to know if and how food webs react, change, or are resilient to higher temperature, pollution, etc. We will use both bulk and compound-specific stable isotopes of nitrogen and carbon isotopes to understand trophic level relationships in both natural and experimentally manipulated ecosystems
Requirements: We are looking for an independent and motivated student with a broad background and interest in biogeochemistry and ecology. The candidate should hold an MSc degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, or Ecology
   
Text: Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems. The Department of Surface Waters Research and Management (Surf) offers a PhD position on food webs in aquatic systems The PhD position is part of an interdisciplinary research project funded by the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology. The research team includes three scientists with different expertise, Carsten Schubert (isotope geochemistry), Jakob Brodersen (fish evolutionary ecology), and Blake Matthews (evolutionary ecology). To this end, the PhD student will work in the state of the art organic geochemical and isotope geochemical laboratories at Eawag in Kastanienbaum. Eawag’s Center for Ecology, Evolution & Biogeochemistry (CEEB) is located on the shore of Lake Lucerne and is a strong nucleus of Eawag research groups aimed at integrating ecology, evolutionary biology, and ecosystem science http://www.eawag.ch/forschung/cc/ceeb/index_EN . The PhD student will interact with a diverse range of researchers studying evolutionary ecology, ecosystem science, and applied environmental science. We are looking for an independent and motivated student with a broad background and interest in biogeochemistry and ecology. The candidate should hold an MSc degree in Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, or Ecology. The position starts as soon as possible and will be part of the PhD program of the department of Environmental System Sciences of ETH Zurich. The duration of this PhD program is up to four years.
