Duties: Topological insulators (TIs) are a new category of solids with unique properties, which are not only fascinating for scientists doing fundamental research but are also interesting for novel applications. Ferromagnetically doped TIs show the quantized anomalous quantum Hall effect (QAHE), i.e. the quantization of the electric resistance without an external magnetic field. This bears the potential to realize a future quantum resistance standard which can be operated without complex high-field magnetic systems and can thus, for example, also be operated integrated with a Josephson voltage standard; The planned work will be conducted within the scope of a European research project. The research activities focus on the experimental examination of chromium- or vanadium-doped (Bi, Sb) 2 Te 3 samples manufactured by the project partners. The aim is to optimize the QAHE samples for a future metrological use as quantum resistance standard in close cooperation with the partners; Magnetic transport and noise examinations to be carried out on QAHE samples in a dilution refrigerator low-temperature system with high-field solenoid, also by applying high-precision resistance ratio bridges; Improvement of the measurement setup and techniques; Elaborating criteria in order to optimize the manufacturing of ferromagnetically doped TI materials and QAHE samples so that they can be used as quantum resistance standard; Elaborating scientific publications and participating in international conferences; Participating in the issuing of project reports
Requirements: You have completed your university studies (Master's or German Diplom ) of physics and have obtained a doctor’s degree with the grade "very good" You have attested experience and skills in experimental research work; You have knowledge of and experience in the following fields: o Quantum Hall effect; o Operation of low-temperature systems (mixing cryostats); o Electric transportation examinations; o Setting-up measuring facilities and assessing and programming measurement data; You are an excellent team player and have good communication skills; You have a good command of English; You are able to carry out scientific work independently; You are physically fit for working in a laboratory; You are willing to go on business trips within Germany and abroad

December 2019 The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science. Department 2.6 "Quantum Electrical Metrology" of Division 2 is looking for a Scientist with a doctor's degree in physics to join it as soon as possible. The post is limited to 2 years. You will be employed at our Braunschweig site. The remuneration will be paid up to remuneration group 14 TVöD Bund, depending on your personal qualification.
