Position: Human Cell Atlas Product Owner

Duties: As product owner, your role will include: Working with international collaborators and project stakeholders to formulate and provide user value through software delivery; Enabling and inspiring the data wrangling and development teams to deliver valuable and user friendly products and services; Prioritising the activity of the team based on a deep understanding of value to the community, as well as ensuring appropriate deliverables are met; Orchestrating the design and delivery of the HCA ingest platform by taking the strategic vision and working with the technical lead to turn it into a pragmatic and realistic plan; Convey the vision of the DCP, the ingestion service and our metadata standards to the team; Shaping the future of the HCA by working with the leadership team to define strategy; Building a deep understanding of user needs through community engagement and collaboration with other product owners and UX experts; Working in a dynamic, collaborative and supportive culture where your talent to deliver is valued over title, role, or adherence to processes; Exploiting opportunities for networking and grant building that arise out of delivery activities; Supporting staff in building positive relationships with data contributors (our users!); Representing the project and the institute at project meetings and scientific conferences; Learning about advances in science and technology every day; This role also comes with line management responsibilities for a team of 5
Requirements: A comprehensive understanding of managing life science data through working experience in international collaborative projects; Experience gathering requirements and delivering software that meets user needs; An ability to think creatively about problems, consider multiple possible solutions and - work with the team to deliver them in the simplest possible way; Experience in taking a long term view on a project, planning for risks associated with delivery and working with senior management to overcome them; Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and an ability to work as part of a team of people with a range of skills and a diversity of backgrounds; A love of agile principles, an enthusiasm for identifying better ways to develop software and deliver value to users, and the flexibility to find these ways; You will be able to demonstrate an understanding of both software development and the life sciences domain, either through your degree in a relevant subject, your academic or industrial background or through your body of work in large, collaborative projects
   
Text: Human Cell Atlas Product Owner Location: EMBL-EBI, Hinxton near Cambridge, UK Staff Category: Limited contract Contract Duration: 2 years and 6 months Grading: 7 (monthly salary starting at £3,408.41 after tax) Closing Date: 21 November 2019 Reference Number: EBI01547 The Archival Infrastructure and Technology (AIT) team is looking for a dynamic and talented product owner to join our team working on the Human Cell Atlas (HCA) Data Coordination Platform (DCP) ingest service and metadata standards. The DCP allows scientists to share, organise and analyse cellular resolution data that the community can use to create comprehensive reference maps of all human cells. EMBL-EBI is building the DCP in collaboration with scientists and engineers from the Broad Institute, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, the University of California Santa Cruz and Stanford University. As the ingest and metadata product owner you will work with the other product owners and technical leads in the collaboration to translate the strategic vision for the DCP into an actionable plan and to drive its delivery. You will also collaborate with other members of the Molecular Archives Cluster who operate the EMBL-EBI archives such as BioSamples and the ENA to ensure the HCA data is broadly accessible to the community. A key goal for the product owner will be to understand user needs and work with the team to develop processes that ensure contributed data is Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reproducible (FAIR) and can be used to build the atlas. The HCA is using cellular resolution data generation such as single-cell gene expression techniques as the basis for both understanding human health and understanding different disease mechanisms.
