Text: The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science. Within the framework of the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 910 on “Control of self-organizing nonlinear systems” coordinated by the Technische Universität Berlin, at Department 8.4 “Mathematical Modelling and Data Analysis”, we are looking for a doctoral candidate specializing in (theoretical) physics, applied mathematics or a related engineering field, preferably with special skills in nonlinear dynamics and/or statistical physics to join us as soon as possible to carry out research within the scope of project B5 on “Control of multiscale pattern formation and application to cardiac dynamics and active matter”. This position is available on the basis of a 3-year fixed-term contract. The remuneration will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %). Your tasks: Department 8.4 performs mathematical research work with a strong relation to applications and metrology and normally cooperates with experimentally oriented PTB working groups as well as with numerous external partners from science and industry. For further information, please consult http://www.ptb.de/cms/en/ptb/fachabteilungen/abt8/fb-84.html. In project B5, we will collaborate with mathematical and theoretically oriented working groups of CRC910 (see http://www.itp.tu-berlin.de/sfb910/ ). Your work will focus on: Modelling and numerical simulations of active fluids such as bacterial suspensions or fields of hydrodynamically coupled cilia as regards waves, pattern formation and synchronization Applying analytical methods of nonlinear dynamics such as linear stability analysis or amplitude formulas and/or numerical methods such as bifurcation analysis and continuation Developing control methods in models of active fluids Actively collaborating with other projects in CRC910 and with experimental partners Your profile: You have completed university studies (German Diplom or Master's) of a relevant subject with a very good grade. Ideally, you have already produced scientific publications in relevant fields. You have experience in the numerical simulation of partial differential equations and/or coupled oscillators and/or in nonlinear dynamic methods. You are able to perform mathematical analysis and to model physical systems and experiments. You have excellent communication skills and are a team player. You enjoy autonomous scientific work as well as project activities. You have a very good command of English and are able to present results convincingly, both orally and in writing. You are willing to travel within Germany as well as abroad within the scope of your assignments.
