Position: Research Manager as Head of CLAIRE Office Zurich

Duties: CLAIRE is a bottom up initiative by the European AI community that seeks to strengthen European excellence in AI research and innovation. To achieve this, CLAIRE proposes the establishment of a pan-European Confederation of Laboratories for AI Research and a new, central facility, the CLAIRE Hub. Several regional offices are currently created that will support the establishment of the CLAIRE organization and serve as local contact points. They provide information and connect to the local academic and industrial communities (universities, industry, start-ups), as well as to governmental bodies and regional and national public administration and other relevant parties (associations etc.); To establish a CLAIRE regional office in Zurich/Switzerland, we seek a flexible, independent pioneer and networker with a passion for, and ideally research experience in, AI; Your responsibilities: build up and develop the CLAIRE office Zurich into a sustainable organization; specifically: liaise with academic partners and governmental bodies (Cantonal and Federal level in Switzerland, Alpine region, Hungary, Slowenia); establish a network and maintain good contacts with relevant industrial partners; interact with press and media; deliver administrative support to the CLAIRE network together with the other regional offices (e.g., organize events, find collaboration partners, collect and distribute information); contribute to CLAIRE becoming a mature organization with a healthy innovation ecosystem; travel frequently within Switzerland and Europe
Requirements: You have a degree in Informatics or Natural Sciences – MSc required, Ph.D. ideal – and research experience in artificial intelligence, deep learning, data science or similar. Furthermore, you have a strong interest in research, technology and research management, and possess sound knowledge of the research and innovation landscape in Switzerland. We offer a dynamic start-up environment with geographically distributed partners. Therefore, we are looking for someone with experience in working in a diverse international environment, the ability and negotiation skills to create and maintain a network of industrial and academic partners, high self-motivation, exceptional organizational skills and the willingness to frequently travel nationally and internationally. Fluency in English is required and knowledge of German and French or Italian are welcome. Experience in editing documents and reports in a scientific context is required, an affinity to public relations work is a plus

Since 2013 the Institute of Applied Information Technology (InIT) is a driving force behind one of Europe’s first interdisciplinary Data Science Research Centers (the ZHAW Datalab). Together with ZHAW’s recently established strategic initiative on the digital transformation (ZHAW digital, www.zhaw.ch/digital ), it has a big interest in a lively research environment for artificial intelligence in Europe, as currently established by the Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe (CLAIRE, https://claire-ai.org/ ). The InIT aims at supporting CLAIRE by establishing a regional office for Switzerland in Zurich. Within the Research Group Information Engineering of the Institute of Applied Information Technology and in collaboration with ZHAW digital, we are looking for a mature and excellent candidate as: Research Manager as Head of CLAIRE Office Zurich (50-100 %) CLAIRE is a bottom up initiative by the European AI community that seeks to strengthen European excellence in AI research and innovation. The new CLAIRE office Zurich is backed up by the support of the Swiss AI research community and the broad presence of a thriving academic and industrial AI community at this strategic geographic location. Initially limited to 50% and to one year in the start-up phase, we see a high likelihood of perpetuating the position and increase the staff in the next years with the expressed support of the community. The initial place of work will be in Winterthur, with the plan to move the office to Zurich after one year. Given respective qualifications, the successful candidate may start right away with a higher workload than 50 %, in this case taking over additional post-doctoral responsibilities within the Research Group Information Engineering at the InIT (e.g., managing continuing education offers in data science, contributing to research projects).
