The Sensor & Measurement Systems Group of the Zurich University of Applied Sciences - School of Engineering, in cooperation with the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Basel is looking for an outstanding candidate, starting September 2019, as: PhD Candidate in artificial intelligence / image processing for skin disease diagnostic (60%) Your responsibilities: Project collaboration: development of a full-body thermal image scanner for patients Doctoral thesis includes research in the field of medical thermography Responsible for the design, implementation and clinical validation of a 3D thermal image scanner Opportunity to start teaching at the ZHAW School of Engineering Thermal imaging is an investigational tool whose advantages are undisputed in engineering, i.e. for the non-destructive testing of composite materials, or in the photovoltaic industry. Medical applications of thermal imaging exhibit great potential. In the US, thermal imaging benefits many investigations. We have recently identified that thermal imaging is of great utility to diagnose contact eczema and erysipelas (bacterial infection below the skin surface). This project aims to produce a full body thermal imaging scanner for patients to later use as a next generation diagnostic tool coupled with a 360° conventional photography device and artificial intelligence data analysis. Such a device will be very useful for the quantification and possible prediction of affected areas in different skin disease like psoriasis and eczema. The PhD is expected to conduct cutting edge research in the field of medical thermography. He or she will be in charge of designing, implementing and clinically validating a 3D thermal imaging scanner. Results will be published in high impact peer-reviewed journals and presented to international conferences. In parallel, the student will have the possibility to be involved in teaching activities at the ZHAW School of Engineering. The position is located at the ZHAW School of Engineering campus Winterthur. The student will be registered at the Department of Biomedical Engineering of the University of Basel and will join the Network for Data Science https://phd-data-science.ch/en/.
