Duties: Genetic engineering of bacteria in complex communities is an unmet need to understand the functioning and the evolution of the intestinal microbiota in health and disease. Recently developed molecular tools that harness the power of CRISPR/Cas systems allow elimination of specific bacterial strains or interfering with gene expression at unprecedented precision. Our aim is to combine this technology with broad host-range mobile genetic elements that can deliver genetic payloads into very diverse microbiota species (from Proteobacteria to Firmicutes), directly in the mammalian gut environment
Requirements: Candidates should be fully proficient in using synthetic biology tools and be willing to tackle high-risk high-gain projects in a competitive research field
   
Text: Postdoctoral Researcher (in the Lab of Prof. Médéric Diard) 100% The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading life sciences institutes in the world. It consists of 30 groups and 500 employees that research how molecules and cells create life, spanning the scale from atom to organism. Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birth place of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates. The Diard Lab at the Biozentrum is searching for a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to spearhead the construction of genetic tools to allow investigating plasticity and evolution of gut microbial communities. Recently developed molecular tools that harness the power of CRISPR/Cas systems allow elimination of specific bacterial strains or interfering with gene expression at unprecedented precision (1,2) . Our aim is to combine this technology with broad host-range mobile genetic elements that can deliver genetic payloads into very diverse microbiota species (from Proteobacteria to Firmicutes), directly in the mammalian gut environment (3) . The development of in situ microbiota genetic engineering tools will enable us to uncover fundamental principles that structure complex microbial communities and to infer the optimal strategy to shape them.
