Duties: The Institute for Biophysics at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen invites applications for two Ph.D. positions to work on theoretical models of learning sequences of actions. The aim of the research project is to study how synaptic plasticity mechanisms across different time scales enables the learning of distinct actions and the chaining of them. Thus, the specific focus of this project lies on the understanding of the role of diverse time scales of synaptic plasticity in networks of relevance for the continuation of this center
Requirements: Suitable candidates should hold a Master in Physics or Computer Science preferably with some additional experiences in Computational Neuroscience and Nonlinear Dynamics. We expect excellent mathematical and coding skills (e.g., python, Matlab, C++) as well as skills in scientific communication (including proficiency in English). The candidate should be curious, highly motivated, self-organized, and show a keen interest to work within the connection between two lively research teams and to perform leading-edge research

These positions should be filled by 1st of July 2019 or soon thereafter. Salary and working hours will be according to the German grade 13 TV-L (50%, currently 19,9 hours per week) with a limited contract of three years. This post is designed to foster young researchers and give the successful applicant the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree. The positions will be affiliated with the groups of Dr. Christian Tetzlaff and Prof. Florentin Wörgötter, who are investigating the emergence of complex behavior from the interplay of diverse neuronal and synaptic processes of neuronal networks (see, e.g., Tetzlaff et al., 2015; Scientific Reports). The aim of the research project is to study how synaptic plasticity mechanisms across different time scales enables the learning of distinct actions and the chaining of them. This project shall also serve as a preparation for a grant application in conjunction with the renewal of SFB 1286 (German Science Foundation, Collaborative Research Center) in the year 2021. Thus, the specific focus of this project lies on the understanding of the role of diverse time scales of synaptic plasticity in networks of relevance for the continuation of this center.
