Text: Postdoctoral Scholar, Biological Modification of Nano-Cellulosic Materials for Energy and Environmental Application Job ID: 16512 Updated: October 25, 2018 Location: Main Campus Position Description The Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in biological modification of nano-cellulosic materials for energy and environmental application. In 2016, the University of Calgary was awarded $75 million, over seven years, from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) for its initiative entitled: “ Global Research Initiative in Sustainable Low Carbon Unconventional Resources ”. The goal of this research is to dramatically reduce the impact of energy extraction and energy use on the environment. As part of the implementation of its GRI scientific strategy and to improve hydrocarbon recovery, while reducing emissions and energy intensity, we are looking to fill a Postdoctoral position to perform research related to the biological modification/functionalization of nano-cellulosic materials for energy and environmental application in Dr. Jinguang Hu’s group in the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at Schulich School of Engineering. We seek applications from qualified and motivated scientists with a passion for clean energy and interdisciplinary research. Successful candidate will be required to work within a team environment and so excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a diverse group of interdisciplinary researchers is a must. Qualifications: • PhD degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Biomaterial Engineering, or other related fields with demonstrated training in protein engineering and characterization. Prior research experiences in bioinspired materials, CO2 capture and conversion, bioprocess engineering, and fermentation are preferred, but not required. Responsibilities: • Engineer proteins aiming at tailored modification of nanocellulose surface. • Recombinant protein production, purification and characterization with methods including FPLC, scattering, spectroscopy, and biological assays. • Collaborate with internal and external groups in material science, chemistry and biology to advance protein structure design and material self-assembly. • Development of novel biological materials and systems to reduce carbon footprint. • Communicate results through high-impact publications and international conferences. Postdoctoral position offers a stipend of $55,000 CAD/year for 1 year, with the possibility of renewal depending on performance; plus benefits, travel and computer allowance, and operating budgets. Postdoctoral fellow will be expected to apply for major funding opportunities they are eligible for (e.g. NSERC, Killam, AITF, Banting).
