Position: Research Fellow

Duties: Participate in research independently and as a member of a research team. Undertake experimental procedures to acquire data. Maintain accurate and detailed records of all experiments conducted. Interpret and present data to the research team. Contribute to the preparation of publications and grant applications, as directed by the supervisor. Perform administrative duties related to the research and day-to-day operation of the laboratory.Supervise research students. Attend and present at conferences and seminars and disseminate research findings as appropriate. Develop an academic research profile in the areas of cancer biology and biochemistry
Requirements: PhD in cancer biology, biochemistry, immunology or a related discipline. Strong evidence of a rising career trajectory demonstrated by strong publications in high-quality journals, awards, scholarships and/or involvement in research activities. Experience with animal handling and mouse models of disease (preferably cancer) and a strong awareness of their ethical treatment. Experience with techniques associated with protein biochemistry, molecular biology, and mammalian cell culture. Ability to co-ordinate a study from start to finish both independently and in collaboration with other laboratory personnel. Ability to be proactive and to use initiative to solve problems quickly and efficiently. Excellent organisational skills coupled with the ability to complete detailed projects effectively and independently. Excellent computer skills, especially in Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud and Prism. Strong commitment to the highest standards of scientific and ethical integrity and the ability to strictly adhere to study protocols. Excellent written and oral English-language communication skills. Knowledge of general laboratory OH&S procedures. Ability to meet agreed upon deadlines

The successful applicant will report to the laboratory head, Dr Laura Edgington-Mitchell. The Protease Pathophysiology Lab seeks to understand the contribution of proteases and protease-activated receptors (G protein-coupled receptors) to carcinogenesis, metastasis, and cancer pain using complimentary strategies involving animal models, chemical biology, and cell biology. More information on the lab can be found at http://www.bio21.unimelb.edu.au/edgington-mitchell-group The successful applicant will drive the in vivo projects taking place in the lab, thus extensive experience with small animal handling and animal models of disease (preferably cancer) is essential. Experience with animal behaviour experiments and mouse genetics/colony management would also be advantageous. Experience with mammalian cell culture, molecular biology and protein biochemistry is essential. Knowledge of cancer biology or immunology would also be an asset.
