Requirements: The successful candidates will hold Honours degree (minimum 2: 1) in Biological Sciences or a related discipline and will have experience in SNP array, exome and genome analysis. Experience of working with genetics, research and experience of bioinformatics is essential. Post holders must have good inter-personal skills with an ability to work co-operatively in a multidisciplinary setting. IT proficiency at advanced user level (Spreadsheet, Word Processing, Database, Email, Web based applications) is also required

The Department offers excellent training in research for clinical and non-clinical students wishing to obtain higher degrees. We have excellent well-funded and modern multidisciplinary facilities for studying genetic, cellular and animal models, human volunteers and patients with neurological disorders. We are looking for two ambitious, hard-working bioinformaticians to develop innovative techniques and applications to interrogate and identify genetic causes, risks and biomarkers in the wealth of data from the MRC International Centre for Genomic Research and the 100,000 genomes project. As key bioinformatician, you will work on the large amount of genetic and genomic data. This includes analysing SNP array, exome and genome data generated from the 15,000 patients and families enrolled in the MRC study as well as ethnically diverse controls, disease diversity exome and genome data from ~10,000 in-house probands and Solve-RD data and the analysis of the genomes of neurology patients enrolled in the 100,000 genomes project as part of the Neurology Genomics England Clinical Interpretation Partnership (Neurology GeCIP). It is expected that these roles will evolve in the future and will use new techniques on genome sequencing data such as modified versions of Expansion Hunter for repeats and long-read sequencing technology. Post holders will also train students in bioinformatics, basic genomics, sequencing techniques, databases and how to organise and store data long-term and for analysis. One post is available immediately and is funded by a grant from the MSA Trust for three years initially or until 31 March 2022, whichever is sooner, in the first instance. Second post is available from 1 June 2019 and is funded by a grant from the MRC for three years initially or until 31 March 2022, whichever is sooner, in the first instance.
