The Position This staff member provides assistance with instruction and assessment to faculty teaching mathematics courses. The Assistant in Instruction is responsible for leading mathematics problem discussion sessions for Calculus I and Calculus II. The Assistant in Instruction also collaborates with the faculty to develop and assess meaningful hands-on student activity components to the mathematics curriculum. This position requires the ability to work successfully with math students at all levels of understanding and cognitive development using inclusive pedagogical techniques that facilitate student learning in a supportive atmosphere. The position also requires that the successful applicant have the ability to meaningfully engage students who come from varied methodological backgrounds. Finally, we are particularly interested in candidates who will contribute to our departmental commitment to building a more equitable and inclusive mathematics program. Key accountabilities include: Mathematics Instruction Conduct weekly discussion sessions for Calculus I and II; evaluate student work in these sessions and maintain needed records to assist the faculty in course grading. Assist in preparation of up-to-date plans for practice session activities for a variety of other courses in the undergraduate mathematics curriculum at instructor request. Assist during regular class hours in other courses at instructor request. Assist students in mathematical typesetting. Provide support to students learning and using mathematical software. Department Organization and Assessment For core mathematics courses such as Calculus I and II and Introduction to Abstraction (introduction to proof techniques): coordinate and maintain instructional resources, providing consistency each semester as the faculty teaching these courses rotate frequently. Utilize and update student diagnostic and placement exams to advise students Assist in course-level and department-level assessment This is a full-time, academic year position. Qualifications This role requires a Bachelor’s degree in the mathematics or a closely related field and significant teaching experience. A successful candidate for the position must have: Experience with Moodle, the Google Suite, WeBWorK, LaTeX, graphing calculators, Maple, MATLAB, Sage, and/or Mathematica Strong time, task, and project management skills Excellent written and verbal communication skills Willingness to learn new software as needed Ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues A personal commitment to excellence and the mission of a top-tier liberal arts college Ability to work in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment Familiarity with the academic environment and higher education, preferably the liberal arts. Ability and willingness to work weekends, evenings and other non-traditional schedules in order to offer programming at times that coincide with student availability. Excellent communication (written, verbal and presentation) skills. Impeccable organizational (time, task, project management) skills and ability to coordinate resources and staff within the college community. Strong interpersonal skills with ability to develop and maintain collegial relationships. Ability to work collaboratively and effectively across disciplinary boundaries with a diverse group of faculty, students, and staff. Must be flexible and have a positive attitude. Proficiency in basic data management systems, basic computer applications, and cloud services (e.g., Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPress, Moodle, Google Docs, iCloud). Willingness and ability to learn additional applications as needed. Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage confidential information. Ability and willingness to travel (by car, air, train or bus) domestically and internationally as needed.
