Text: doctoral candidate specializing in physics, electrical engineering or a comparable field (19-031-2) Thursday, 25. April 2019 The Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) is the National Metrology Institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with scientific and technical service tasks. It furthers progress and reliability in metrology for society, the economy and science. In Department 2.5, “Semiconductor Physics and Magnetism”, of Division 2, we are looking for a doctoral candidate specializing in physics, electrical engineering or a comparable field to join us as soon as possible. This position is available on the basis of a 3-year fixed-term contract. You will be employed at our Braunschweig site. The remuneration will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 13 TVöD Bund (85 %). At PTB, we want doctoral candidates to be able to focus fully on their research activities. That is why we provide excellent material equipment and extensive support - the ideal conditions for completing a PhD thesis. Your tasks: Graphene is considered a promising material for the future. Its unique properties are fascinating - not only for scientists doing fundamental research, but also for many different applications. In the field of electrical quantum metrology, these applications can help simplify the realization of the unit of resistance and support the revised system of units. Current research activities focus on manufacturing and investigating epitaxial graphene layers on SiC. This work is conducted within the scope of a European research project coordinated by PTB. It is aimed at implementing graphene-based quantum standards for the precise realization of the unit of electric resistance and impedance using the quantum Hall effect. Growing epitaxial graphene on SiC Investigating the transport properties of graphene monolayers Manufacturing graphene components for high-precision AC Hall effect measurements Characterizing these components by means of magnetic transport measurements at low temperatures Developing methods to dope graphene, passivate and optimize its surface, in particular with a view to AC applications Your profile: You have completed university studies of physics, electrical engineering or a comparable field and have obtained at least the grade "good" (Master's or German Diplom ).
