Position: Engineered Systems Tec (Engineered Systems Tec 4/5)

Duties: As a member of the PF-LFS Equipment Maintenance team, this position will provide machine system life cycle support to machine tools located in nine machine shops within Prototype Fabrication (PF) Division used for precision fabrication. Mission areas include preventative maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) for PF machine shops as well as occasionally deploying these services to other Laboratory organizations and programs as needed to achieve institutional success. The technician will also perform new machine installations, upgrades and retrofits, as well as maintaining advanced technology for on-machine measurements of cutting tools and part geometry. This position will be filled at either the Engineered Systems Tec 4 or the Engineered Systems Tec 5 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level . Engineered Systems Tec 4 ($60,400 - $95,900); Performing PM and CM work on a variety of conventional and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) machine tools, to include both newly acquired and legacy equipment that may no longer be supported by the equipment manufacturer; Report to the Equipment Maintenance Technical Team Lead regarding troubleshooting and diagnosis of machine tools and determine needed repairs of electrical/mechanical components and subsystems with special emphasis on machine tools such as CNC and conventional lathes, mills, grinders, drill presses, EDMs, lasers, CMMs and inspection-related equipment; Provide in-depth mechanical repair, electronic diagnostics hydraulic and pneumatic systems troubleshooting, as well as advanced geometry evaluation of machine tools to determine means of re-alignment; Read and interpret machine tool drawings, diagrams and schematics to enable understanding of machine tool subsystem functions and how they integrate into overall performance; Keep detailed and accurate records of maintenance activities performed on individual machine tools; Work both independently and collaboratively in a multi-disciplinary environment that includes scientists, engineers, machinists and other technicians; Engineered Systems Tec 5 ($72,500- $118,200) In addition to the Job Requirements outlined above, qualification at the Engineered Systems Tec 5 level requ i res: Demonstrated ability to read and interpret AC & DC electronic schematics and utilize this knowledge to troubleshoot and repair electro-mechanical systems; Advanced knowledge and experience troubleshooting and repairing electro-mechanical systems; Demonstrated ability to be a technical leader within the organization, including training and mentoring other employees; Demonstrated skills and ability to promptly gain certification as a LANL Energized Electrical Worker
Requirements: Minimum Job Requirements: Knowledge and experience in the use of diagnostic instruments, troubleshooting, and analysis of electro-mechanical systems associated with CNC and conventional machine tools or equivalent systems; Demonstrated experience in development, design, and/or modification of mechanical equipment for a prototype environment; Advanced knowledge and experience performing preventive maintenance on conventional and CNC machine tools or equivalent systems; Demonstrated experience interfacing with customers, suppliers, and commercial technical specialists with emphasis in CNC and conventional machine tools; Demonstrated safety record and knowledge of appropriate ES&H policies and procedures; Ability to acquire and maintain pertinent certifications, such as: Radiological Worker II; Beryllium Worker; forklift operator; crane operator (incidental or qualified); and others that may apply; Demonstrated record of effective written and oral communication skills; Applicant must currently hold, or have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which normally requires US citizenship; Additional Job Requirements for Engineered Systems Tec 5 In addition to the Job Requirements outlines above, qualification at the Engineered Systems Tec 5 requires: Advanced working knowledge with the operation of a variety of machine tool controllers, such as GE, FANUC, MAZATROL, Hurco, Honeywell, Mitsubishi, and HAAS proprietary controllers; Advanced knowledge of the operation, repair and geometry adjustment of high precision machine tools (T-based lathes) and their systems; Demonstrated experience in machine tool geometry verification using diagnostic technologies such as: Renishaw ball-bar and laser alignment methods; Knowledge of machine tool operating languages and proper operation of both conventional and CNC machine tools to enable the technician to successfully machine test parts; Advanced knowledge and experience working in hazardous chemical or radiological work environments and performing maintenance and repair tasks that mitigate the effects of operational hazards; Desired Skills: Working knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic mechanical systems troubleshooting and repair; Working knowledge of HVAC as applied to machine tools, such as spindle and hydraulic chillers, etc; Factory certified technician training for platforms typically utilized in a prototype machining environment: Mazak, HAAS, Mitsubishi, Hurco, etc; Engineered Systems Tec 4 Education Required: Position typically requires a high school diploma and four-to-six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
