Duties: Come join our team! The selected candidate will work in the Environmental Protection and Compliance (EPC) Division as a Waste Management Programs (Quality Assurance) QA shipper for the Waste Management Programs (WMP) Group. The Waste Management Programs QA shipper is responsible for providing waste management shipping reviews and support for Laboratory facility operations and/or processing, loading, and shipping activities. The incumbent will work closely with other members of the group, and will report to the EPC-WMP Group Leader. Specific duties may include, but are not necessarily limited to; inspecting waste storage containers and facilities, ensuring waste is properly characterized and packaged per Department of Transportation regulations including multiple disposal facility Waste Acceptance Criteria, and ensuring compliant handling and documentation of solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes. The selected candidate shall have working knowledge of Federal Regulations (DOT and DOE) and NM State Regulations; ability and demonstrated experience contribute to development of objectives and principles, and achieve goals in creative and effective ways. Incumbent has advanced scope within DOT and Lab-packing within the Laboratory. Works under consultative direction toward predetermined long-range targets. Assignments are often self-initiated
Requirements: Minimum Job Requirements: Certified per DOT 49 CFR as a Basic Hazardous Materials Shipper and Basic Radioactive Materials Shipper or Certified per DOT 49 CFR as an Advanced Hazardous Materials Shipper and Advanced Radioactive Materials Shipper or Certified per DOT 49 CFR as an Advanced Mixed Waste Shipper; A minimum of 5 years of experience packaging, characterizing, and managing hazardous waste; Advanced knowledge of and experience with handling, characterizing, packaging, and/or transporting solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and/or mixed wastes including lab-packing; Advanced understanding of work hazards, safety practices, operating configurations, and lock-out/tag-out policies and procedures; Advanced knowledge of the Laboratory's waste management policies, practices, and procedures; Advanced knowledge of quality assurance practices and principles related to environmental management; Desired Skills: Demonstrated commitment to, and action in, promoting Laboratory objectives in areas of ISM, ISSM, EMS, quality, and workforce diversity, as well as demonstrated knowledge of Laboratory objectives and other statements of policy/practice/procedures; Successful experience and oversight coordinating the cradle to grave management and disposition of non-hazardous, hazardous, chemical, and radioactive wastes; Provides waste-related field/facility operations including shipping activities; Ensures proper documentation, shipping, and handling of solid, liquid, hazardous, radioactive, and mixed wastes; Advanced knowledge of Laboratory organizational structure, technical areas, and facilities; Ability to effectively communicate, interact, and work with internal customers and with Federal, State, and local agencies and deal effectively with the public; Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory requirements associated with best safety, environmental, inspection, packaging, and transportation activities in relation to waste management; Inspects waste containers and serves as point of contact regarding waste management packaging issues; Performs advanced technical analyses and/or reviews of characterization data collected from a broad range of waste characterization techniques to determine whether waste meets shipping, acceptance, and/or processing criteria; Supports the development of waste-related policies and procedures and facilities comprehensive resolutions; Participates and leads in audits and assessments, this may include self-assessments; Develops programs, work packages and implements training, prepares and presents waste management reports; Education: Position typically requires a bachelor’s degree and a minimum eight years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
