Position: Undergraduate Archaeology Summer Student

Duties: Help train the next generation of archaeologists and historic preservationists by joining us this summer! The Resource Management Team of the Environmental Stewardship Group (EPC-ES) has an exciting internship opportunity for a current undergrad student, high school student, or recent graduate. As a student intern, you will receive experience doing compliance archaeology at a federal facility participating in field and laboratory work. Work will include pedestrian surveys, identification of archaeological sites, and digitally recording sites. You will learn excavation skills at a historic homestead site, including how to lay out a grid, document levels and features, create plan and profile sketch maps, and photograph levels and units. You will gain experience writing reports, doing public outreach, conducting research, and learning how to identify prehistoric and historic artifacts
Requirements: Minimum Job Requirements: An interest in archaeology, Pueblo history, the North American Southwest; Ability to carry field gear and walk on uneven ground for long distances; Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as part of a team, including the ability to listen to and use developmental feedback as part of a learning process; Currently enrolled and completing a minimum of twelve undergraduate hours, or have graduated with a bachelor’s degree within the past three years; Have, maintain, or graduated within the past three years with a cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale; Education: Currently enrolled in a bachelors program in any field, or graduated from a bachelors program within the past three years. Where You Will Work Located in northern New Mexico, Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is a multidisciplinary research institution engaged in strategic science on behalf of national security. LANL enhances national security by ensuring the safety and reliability of the U.S. nuclear stockpile, developing technologies to reduce threats from weapons of mass destruction, and solving problems related to energy, environment, infrastructure, health, and global security concerns. The cultural resources management staff of the Environmental Stewardship Group are responsible for compliance requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act, the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, the Archaeological Resources Protection Act, and many other heritage resource State and Federal laws and DOE Orders. The staff participates in project reviews, project planning, surveys, long term stewardship planning, emergency response, and other heritage resource activities. The cultural resources management staff is responsible for managing nearly 2000 archaeological sites and more than 400 historic buildings on LANL property. Staff document cultural resources, assess site eligibility for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, and review potential impacts to cultural resources. This position will focus on supporting current field projects, such as site updating for fire management and other Lab missions and operations, as well as assisting with the excavation of a historic Hispanic-owned homestead.
