Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) is seeking an experienced, creative and talented person focused on student success who has a strong knowledge background to fulfill the full-time tenure-track role of Diesel Mechanic Technology Instructor in the Corrections Education program located at the Washington State Penitentiary in Walla Walla, Washington. This position is filled to fulfill a contract awarded to Walla Walla Community College (WWCC) by the Washington State Board for Community and Technical Colleges (WSBCTC) to operate a correctional education program at the Washington State Penitentiary in accordance with an interagency agreement with the Department of Corrections. Walla Walla Community College and its employees working in a correctional education program are expected to follow all Department of Corrections (DOC) Policies, IT and other Security requirements, follow DOC Operational Memorandums, and comply with the Superintendent's directions. College employees will also comply with the safety and health standards applicable to each educational activity as published by the American Corrections Association and the State of Washington, Department of Labor and Industries. General Responsibilities: WWCC Faculty members are professional educators with the primary responsibility of providing a quality education for all WWCC students. The relationship of the faculty member to the student is one of teacher, mentor, and facilitator of learning. This position will be responsible for developing and teaching assigned courses in Diesel Mechanic Technology in the Corrections Education program located at the Washington State Penitentiary. Essential Functions: Teach Diesel Mechanic Technology Course so the students understand the construction, function and general service of all major equipment components Diagnose mechanical malfunctions and performance problems and take appropriate steps to problem solve Make decisions as to the disposition of worn parts (i.e. usable, or heavily worn, needs replaced etc.) Operate precision diagnostic and repair equipment Read and interpret repair manuals Understand the importance of good public relations with customers, students, employer, and fellow employees Understand and successfully manage good shop safety and operations in an efficient manner Model strong work ethic traits to students and mentor as needed to enhance student success with employment. Competencies Ability to interact with those in custody and/or the public according to expected guidelines; treat people with dignity and respect. Ability to effectively combine an array of methods to enhance understanding, including demonstrations, lectures, group discussions and activities, individual activities, etc.Understand which teaching methods best serve the student's needs, interests, and ability to learn. Ability to recognize the value of cultural, ethnic, gender and other individual differences in people. Ability to build constructive working relationships characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation and mutual respect. Qualifications: Experience in Diesel and heavy-duty mechanics, to include heavy truck, agriculture, construction and forestry equipment and or work experience equivalent to Journeyman level experience required. Evidence of in-depth knowledge of Diesel Mechanic Technology required. Working knowledge in a variety of Diesel Mechanic Technology programs in either an instructional or industry setting required. Experience and understanding of basic repair and diagnostics required. Currently hold a Class A CDL with airbrake endorsements or able to obtain endorsement required. AAAS degree in Diesel Mechanic Technology or related field desired. ASE Certified Master Medium-Heavy Truck Technician desired. Conditions/Terms of Employment This is a full-time tenure-track faculty position exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Faculty terms and conditions of employment are negotiated with their exclusive bargaining representative, the Association for Higher Education. Persons hired must be able to provide acceptable documentation of lawful authorization to work in the United States within three (3) days of employment and official college transcripts. The College is a tobacco free campus. All Walla Walla Community College staff members employed at one of the Corrections Education facilities must be cleared by an FBI background check before being hired into such positions and successfully complete a 6-week corrections training program .
